Cartier Love Bracelet

I had read about the Cartier Love Bracelet which was wore by the China Diving queen, Guo Jingjing, in the 18 Aug issue of the New Paper.

"So, on her left wrist, she sports a HK$3,950 ($800) Cartier Love bracelet from her boyfriend Kenneth Fok, the playboy grandson of the late Hong Kong business tycoon Henry Fok."

I was intrigued by the very idea of a love bracelet...And by Cartier! And only $800? Really?

Hmmm....I think I can afford that. Or rather SO can afford that. A pair would only costs $1600.

So I did a search for the love bracelet.

The real love bracelet does not cost S$800. It retails from US$2500 for pink gold, to US$5000 for platinum.

Gosh...it is so expensive! I cannot afford that! Did the papers get the price wrong?

The Cartier love bracelet has a interesting history though. It is not exactly a new creation.

The Cartier love bracelet was first seen in the summer of 1969, created by the late Aldo Cipullo, whose early work for Cartier focused on modern interpretations of ancient designs and legends.

The Love Bracelet was Cipullo's interpretation of the Chastity Belt, a device husbands are said to have locked around their wive's waists to ensure fidelity while the men were away.

Cipullo designed a two piece bracelet that bolts together around the wrist. It comes with a tiny screwdriver to take it on and off, symbolizing a "locked up," committed relationship.

Cartier just introduced a new twist for the original bracelet, the Love Charity Bracelet, a knotted silk bracelet in several colors. Each silk bracelet holds a miniature, pink gold bracelet at its front. Silk colors represent the charity that a portion of proceeds will be donated to and each charity is sponsored by a celebrity.

Hmm...maybe the papers was talking about the Love Charity Bracelet? The one on Jingjing's wrist dun looked like gold or silver. It looked like a piece of string.

Well, the price of a Love Charity Bracelet is about US$500.

Hmmm...US$500 for a piece of string and 18k white gold ring.

Let me think about it.
